Gemba? What’s That All About?

Gemba is a Japanese word which means “at the site” or “the real place”. In business, gemba refers to the place where value is created; in manufacturing the gemba is the factory floor, but the word can refer to any “place”, such as a construction site, a sales floor or a facility’s campus.

In lean manufacturing principles, the concept behind gemba is that problems are often visible, and the best improvement ideas will come from “going to the gemba“. The gemba walk is an activity that takes management to the front lines to look for waste and opportunities to improve efficiency.

When gemba is used in conjunction with process improvement methodologies, it refers to the act of making observations of the process in action. In cases where there are preconceived notions of the primary issues and/or there is a large volume of data available, the need for gemba can be overlooked.
